Mt. Moon

Mt. Moon is a series of caves and mountains that lead from Pewter City to Cerulean City. They can be a bit of a pain to get through, but they can offer excellent training, and a few rare items for those who look thoroughly.

"When we were training this morning." Cairo answered. "It took me by surprise too." He decided not to mention what he witnessed from Coal. Not until he knew what it meant. He laughed to himself about Matsuko giving her potion to that guy, before taking off. It took long enough, but they were finally on their way out of Pewter City. Matsuko's hand in his, Cairo looked up at the series of Mountains ahead. It was said that the pass through Mt. Moon was a two day trip at the least. So there was no need to rush. Especially not with the company of his best friend, and his... Wait... What was Matsuko to him? I mean, obviously he liked her, and she seemed to like him too, but... He shook his head rapidly, forcing the thought from his head as he looked around. There were Pokemon EVERYWHERE! So many different types! He saw a Cubone and considered catching it, but decided to let it run free when he saw there were three others with it. He didn't want to break up a happy family. For now he would play it cool. After all, they would reach the first cave soon if they just stayed on the path.

Lance was moving behind Matsuko and Cairo his eyes were down and looking at the pokedex in his hand scanning the group of cubone and then listening to the long description that the red device gave him. He had to walk faster eventually getting ahead of Matsuko and Cairo and scanning all the pokemon around them, Pikachu remained atop his head as he continued scanning all the pokemon around him, his pokedex rested on his next target a white furred monkey, the monkey hung down from one of the tree’s outside of the cave and the pokedex had described him as a fighting type, Lance didn’t want a fighting type like Mankey in his line up but he had noticed Cairo had been eyeing one in a book before they had left pallet town. Lance looked up at Pikachu but the small mouse was asleep on his head so he would have to use somebody else. He hadn’t trained Abra much and the small psychic type had a lot it needed to work on. So he tossed the pokeball up and the sleeping pokemon appeared, Lance pushed his finger forward at the Mankey and looked down at Abra, now would be the time to test Abra’s two new moves that he had taught him. “Abra use ice punch on Mankey” Abra stood up to it’s feet and dashed forward its hand glowing a bright blue color as it slammed forward for the speedy monkey slamming its fist right into his face. The mankey fell from the tree and to the ground before getting up with an angry snarl at the pokemon trainer.

Matsuko was in no rush to capture any of the Pokemon she saw. After all, her goal wasn't the same as the others'. The Contests were her goal and creating different appeals. When she saw a Pokemon that interested her, however, she wouldn't let it go, even if she had to chase it down. The little family of Cubone made her lips curl up in a smile. They were just adorable. All of her Pokemon were out and walking along with them, enjoying the scenery before they reached the caves. One Pokemon stood out to her however and her eyes lit up as Paras came rushing by. "Pidgey, hurry, use Quick Attack!" She ran over to it as Pidgey attacked, her other two Pokemon right behind her. She couldn't let it get away from her.

It wasn't long after arriving on the path that Matsuko and Lance both found Pokemon they wished to catch, and began their battles. They were advancing, and getting better. While Cairo felt he was just standing and doing nothing. But no matter how much he looked around, Cairo couldn't find a Pokemon that suited his battle style. Well, He could catch a Mankey like Lance, but he didn't want to catch the same pokemon as his friends. He and Matsuko already both had Charmanders. So he didn't move. He just watched. Lance's Abra was looking pretty good. But Wild Mankeys were tough, and didn't like to be messed with. Matsuko made a good choice using a Flying type against a Bug like Paras, But Pidgey didn't know a lot of strong flying moves yet. Mira may have been a better choice. He watched both battles carefully, evaluating as he always did. After all, there was nothing for him here.

The mankey shot forward slamming his fist into Abra sending the tiny pokemon back to its trainer a small startled look upon its face as it rose to its feet, Lance had to decide quick as the mankey darted forward coming for a strike for Abra it leaped up ready to hit Abra, so he made a quick decision one that he made almost as quickly as most. “Abra use teleport,” Abras body lit up and the small pokemon disappeared appearing behind the mankey, “now ice punch” Abra’s tiny hand glowed a bright sapphire color as he struck the mankey in the back sending the monkey to its knees, he tossed up the pokeball returning Abra to his ball before tossing out another one. “Go Ekans” the small purple snake erupted from its shell almost immediately and hissed at the monkey. “ekans use bite” the pokemon lurched forward and bit into mankey once again sending the pokemon to the ground. The mankey rose up and leaped into the air slamming his foot across ekans face sending the pokemon reeling towards the ground.

The crablike Paris recovered from it's hit quickly, firing a shot of stun spore at Pidgey in return. "Pidgey, fly higher!" Matsuko yelled. Pidgey obeyed and flew out of Paras' range. It caught a little of the stun spore, slowing it's movements, but not enough to effectively stop it. "Swoop down and use tackle!" She said. Pidgey attempted to tackle, but Paras was able to dodge the slowed down Pidgey and begin a charge of it's own. As Paras ran toward Pidgey attempting to tackle it, Matsuko thought quickly. "Peck!" Pidgey positioned itself so that it's beak pointed toward the charging Paras, and it pecked, using the force of both Pokemon to knock the Paras out. Matsuko threw the Pokeball, and after a short struggle, she had captured a Paras!. "Look guys! I caught it!" She said, turning to Lance. It wasn't until then that she noticed he was in a battle of his own, so she walked to Cairo's side and watched Lance's battle carefully.

Matsuko and Lance were both in the midst of intense battles to capture Pokemon that they wished to train. But Cairo had seen nothing he wanted since his Caterpie. It was a little upsetting, but he didn't waste time sulking. As the two battled on, Cairo walked along the path. He made sure to stay within earshot of his companions. He was looking along the walls, and floors for anything of value he could find, and he was just about to turn back when he heard a voice coming from just to his left. "Hey you! Battle me!" Cairo turned to see a young girl walking toward him, and his eyes narrowed. Visibility was limited, but he could make out the girls shape vaguely. "One on one." She said. "I've been here training all day. I want to see the results." Without awaiting an answer, she threw a pokeball to the ground and released a Growlithe.

"Cool!" Cairo said excitedly. He had never seen a Growlithe in person before. He reached for the Pokeball on his belt, and tossed it, releasing Coal. "What kind of Charmander is that?" The nameless girl asked. "The kind that's going to beat you! Coal Scratch" Coal moved with suberb speed, but the Growlithe was even faster, able to dodge his attack with ease. Growlithe countered with Tackle, but the flame on Charmanders tail made it easy to locate, while Growlithe was harder to see. Charmander took the hit, but didn't back down. Growlithe tried to follow up the attack with a flamethrower, but Cairo quickly commanded Coal to counter with it's own Flamethrower. A battle of speed would result in Growlithe's victory but perhaps they could overpower it. The flames met halfway between the two Fire Pokemon, and the two seemed equal in power. But then, Cairo saw hints of the phenomenon that he had witnessed in training that morning. Black flames mixed within Coal's flamethrower and Growlithe bagan to fall behind. the flames quickly encompassed the puppy pokemon, and when they subsided, it was no longer capable of battle. "Great job Coal!" Cairo exclaimed. The surprised girl recalled her Growlithe and ran into the cave without so much as sharing her name. With that, Cairo returned to his friends, and awaited their preparedness to continue.

By the time Cairo had returned to the battle Lance held up a pokeball, inside rested the Mankey that had put up such a great fight. He didn’t jump for joy instead he stepped up just as Cairo had done holding the pokeball out in front of Cairo, his lips curled into a small smile as he had done so. “Cairo trade me I’ll give you the Mankey for the Butterfree,” Pikachu seemed to call from the top of the boy’s head “Pika” He looked on awaiting the words from Cairo telling him that he would trade within him and when he did that would be perfect for Lance. Since he wanted Butterfree as a main addition to his party in the end by the time he would reach the elite four. He placed his legs closer together and simply watched expecting his friend to say yes to the trade that danced in front of him, Mankey was one of the pokemon that Cairo had taken a liking to within the school and Lance knew that better than most other people so he was sure his young friend wouldn’t pass up the chance for him to have that pokemon.

Matsuko let her Paras out, watching as it interacted with her other Pokemon. It was shy, but it quickly warmed up to the others. With a small smile, she let her Pokemon follow her as she wandered around idly. She wasn't in a rush to collect Pokemon. In fact, she wasn't quite sure if she could handle a lot of Pokemon. She was happy with the few she already had. She came across some berries and stopped to look at them and collect some, remembering the lessons she'd gone over in class. "This one restores health." she murmured to herself, giggling as her Pokemon helped her collect some. "This one heals poison." she then heard some yelling from just a few yards away. "Hey you! Battle me!" Matsuko and her Pokemon got there just in time to catch Coal's black flames mix with the regular flames. Her eyes widened a little bit and looked through her PokeDex for information on it. She found nothing besides the fact that it was rare and more powerful than normal flames.

She stared at the girl for a second as she ran off. What a weird girl. But her attention went back to Cairo, who she gave a slight smile to. "That was interesting." she said, referring to the black flames. But she didn't really say anything else, just walked back with him to where Lance was. Mira began chattering excitedly with Coal, trying to imitate the black flames, but with no real results.

Cairo felt a great degree of pride in his Charmander's victory, however, there were still questions in his mind about these strange flames that he produced. There was no scientific explanation for it. Even Dexter believed it to only be a rumor. He never said anything to Coal about it, even though he had witnessed it earlier that morning. He wasn't even sure he wanted Coal to practice it, for fear that it could be painful to him. He was shaken out of his reflective moment by Matsuko, who he was unaware had been watching. "Yeah..." He said, in a more concerned than excited tone. "I'm not sure what to think about it yet."

He continued to reflect on the issue as he and Matsuko walked back toward the area where Lance was battling. He noticed Mira attempting to recreate Coal's ability, which scared him further, though he didn't want to show it. "Be careful Mira. Don't want to burn anything." As they arrived, Lance was just finishing up. Lucky guy. Cairo thought. But what Lance approached him with was more than surprising. He reached onto his belt and removed the Pokeball containing his Butterfree. He stared at the ball silently for several moments. He captured the Butterfree for it's Psychic abilities, which could take down opponents with high defense, such as Brock, whom he had ended up using Nidoran to battle. He had always liked Mankeys, since they were children, however... A grin played on Cairo's face as he looked at his friend. "I'll trade it for your Abra." It was a bold move, but well worth it if it worked. Trading a Psychic type for a Fighting type simply wasn't a smart move. But a Psychic for another Psychic could be managed. He met Lance's stare, awaiting his answer.

Lance thought lightly his fingers tapping along his child-like features contemplating the thought that if he traded Abra for butterfree, he breathed a light breath through his lips in the direction of his friend before switching the pokeballs placing the one for Abra within the waiting Palm of his friend and pulling the one for butterfree into his own. He stepped back on that thought and threw the pokeball forward allowing the giant butterfly like pokemon to slip forth into the very air, he cycled through the poxedex for a quick second before pulling up a tm and watching it much like pushing a move upon his new butterfree.

Matsuko didn't pay too much attention to their trading. She was focused on getting through the caves. Being enclosed never was something she looked forward to. There was just too much risk. Things could close her in and trap her. She could get lost. It could be dark. All of those things combined were just the definition of these caves, so she wanted to get it over with as soon as she could. Of course, she knew that the other two would want to get some training in and catch some Pokemon, so she put up a strong front and grinned, pointing at the entrance of the first of many caves. "Hey, guys! Look!" Mira jumped with joy and ran towards the entrance, pulling her trainer along. Matsuko was getting closer to the cave a little too quickly for her liking...

Cairo grinned as he looked at the pokeball containing his new Abra. He released it from it's Pokeball, and greeted it kindly before pointing his pokedex at it. After a moment of investigation, he smiled and put the device away. "We're going to make an amazing team." He told the Abra, who had already fallen asleep. He laughed to himself and returned it to it's ball before setting his eyes on the Charmander pair and walking behind Matsuko until they reached the caves. He had seen a map of the caves a few times, but never gotten his hands on one, so he only had a vague idea of how to get through them. Luckily, there was some light that shone through the ceiling, as well as the light from Coal and Mira's flames. "Basically, if we keep heading north as best we can, we'll make it to Cerulean city in about two days." He said. Of course, there would be times when there were forks, or unable to continue north. Those were the times that would be most difficult. But he was sure they could make it through just fine. It didn't take far into the dark cave for Cairo's hand to find it's way to Matsuko's, however it was over an hour before he spoke a word. His eyes were peeled for different Pokemon, but all he managed to see were Zubat. "Pickings aren't great here, eh guys?"

Pikachu was the first to answer to Cairo’s words with a light cry of its name “Pika” Lance was the next to follow eyes dancing around the entirety of the cave falling upon the bat like creatures that floated around, the pickings here were very slim and he was sure that neither the three of them wanted a Zubat, it didn’t take long though for them to get in before they came to one of the so famous forks in the road within the cave that led off to the left or the right and Lance had to turn to Matsuko and Cairo to question the direction they needed to go, none of them had a map so it was pretty much them wandering until they found the exit to the cave. He awaited for the answer of the two of them but instead Pikachu leapt down and was pointing in the direction of the right path “Pika, Pika”

Matsuko looked around the dark cave. She couldn't see anything but Zubat, and couldn't hear anything but the fluttering of their wings. Occasionally, she saw some rocks that looked strangely similar to Geodude, but she was looking for neither of those Pokemon. And although she had a small fear of caves, she didn't mind it since her hand rested comfortably in Cairo's. When they came to the split, she shrugged and suggested going right like Pikachu said. However, under all the fluttering of wings and the sound of dripping water, she heard a tiny voice. "Clefairy. Clefairy!" The voice came from the left. Matsuko dropped Cairo's hand and started running into the left tunnel. Mira followed without hesitation, since her trainer was moving into pitch darkness following the voice. It wasn't too long before the darkness swallowed the both of them up.

As they arrived at the fork, Cairo tried to remember what he had seen on the maps. Most of the early forks were set up in such a way that both ways lead to the same location, but he couldn't remember which ones. He couldn't recall if this first fork was one of them, so he decided that following Pikachu's advice couldn't hurt. He began walking toward the right path, listening to the echoes of their footsteps, before Matsuko suddenly broke away from him and began running toward the left path. "Wait!!!" But it was too late. Matsuko and Mira were both well down the path. "Idiots..." Cairo said under his breath as he turned and began down the path behind them. However he didn't run. In this darkness, it would be easy to pass right by them without even knowing. "Coal, turn up the light." He said. Using a variation of the Ember attack, Coal made the flame on his tail grow larger, allowing for slightly better sight. But even so, Cairo couldn't see them. "Matsuko!" He yelled out, but he only heard his own echo. "Dammit..."

Lance had turned his gaze down the right path glad that somebody was on pikachu's side because he himself was not so sure, Lance began walking down the right path until he heard the same call Matsuko did and heard her dash off down the complete opposite path, he rotated around just as quickly as Cairo and called after her, "MATSUKO!" but only to have his voice returned back to his own ears, he took one of the pokeballs from his side and threw it forward allowing the ball to hit the ground and the small snake-like pokemon slithered forth the ball slipping back to his hand. He looked down at Ekans with a small look of grimace, "Find Mira and Matsuko, and hurry we will stay here" he gripped Cairo's arm before he slipped off keeping him where he was "Running off now would be stupid all three of us would be lost within this cave, with no idea on where the exit is better all three of us lost together or separately if you wanna run off to find her I won't stop you but this is my warning you will be absorbed into the darkness as she has." For now all Lance would do was wait with Pikachu on his shoulder now for his snake-like pokemon to return.

"Clefairy! Clefairy!"

The voice was getting fainter now. Matsuko ran faster, but skidded to a stop before she crashed face-first into rock. A dead end. She looked around at what little she could see with the light from Mira and realized she'd run a bit farther from the other two than she had planned. She sat against the cave wall to catch her breath. The voice was now gone, and so was her adrenaline. "Crap. We're going to need to find our way back. Don't suppose you remembered the path we took, did you, Mira?" her Charmander shook its head and sat down beside her. They sat in silence for a while, but the silence began to get to her. Matsuko picked up Mira and started walking back the way she thought she came from, but in the dark, everything looked the same. "Cairo!? Lance!? Can you guys hear me!?"

Before Cairo could take off after Matsuko, he found himself in the grips of Lance. His best friend spoke sound logic, but it didn't change the fact that Matsuko was out in the dark cave alone... It took a moment, but eventually Cairo calmed down. "Alright." He said to Lance. "I'll wait here. But I have an idea." He knelt down and pulled a mass of leaves out of his backpack. "I grabbed these from the Forest this morning." He said. "Coal, Ember!" With that, the lizard Pokemon set the pile of leaves ablaze, creating a light down the path that Matsuko had run down. "Maybe she can find her way back." He said, before taking a seat and looking down for any sight of Matsuko and Mira's return.

It didn't take long for Matsuko to return once the light had been set to illuminate the path back. Cairo stood to his feet as he saw her coming, wondering if she had managed to capture the clefairy. The look on her face suggested that she had failed to catch it. When she arrived back with the group, he flicked her foerehead. It was the way that he used to scold her when they were children when she did something reckless. "Don't run off like that!" He told her. "It's hard to see in here. How long do you think it would take us to find you if you got lost?" He took her hand and then they continued along the path. "When we make it out of this cave there's a short path that leads to the next cave. When we get out of that cave, it's only a short walk to Cerulean City. I think we should set up camp between this cave and the next." They walked down the path, only stopping on occassion to battle an attacking wild Pokemon, until they finally reached the caves exit to find that it was already late at night. "We were in there longer than I thought..."

Matsuko pouted and crossed her arms, eye sglued to the ground. It was the same reaction she always gave in response to his scoldings. Even after several years apart, nothing changed; she still felt like a child. "You would have found me eventually. You always did before. You couldn't get rid of me if you tried." She didn't say anything else on the subject since she was still a little cross about letting Clefairy get away. A pokemon she would only see a few times in her lifetime and she simply let it get away. Mira mimicked her trainer's sour mood, crossing its chubby arms and stomping her feet as she walked beside her. In true Matsuko fashion, her mood was lifted the moment she stepped outside and the night sky caught her attention. She let go of Cairo's hand to run to a small open area and took a deep breath. It was nice being able to fill her lungs with fresh air after being stuck in that cave for so long. She motioned for the two of them to come over. "Are we going to rest for the night?" she asked them, even though the exhaustion hadn't caught up with her yet.

Lance had to admit. As a kid, he always thought that Cairo and Matsuko would end up together. It wasn't until Cairo went away to that Prep School for two years that he started to see the way Matsuko had grown up. But now that they were all back together, and they still held the same relationships they had as kids, Lance was certain. Those two were fated for each other. Cairo would scold Matsuko, then she would pout and he would comfort her. It had been that way since they were four. Lance couldn't help but laugh at the two. "So are you two officially a couple now or are just gonna keep going around casually holding hands? Once they reached the outside, He yawned and rubbed his eyes. "Yeah let's turn in. I don't want it to be too late when we get to Cerulean City. I'm going to whoop you in the next Contest." With that he set up his sleeping bag and took off to gather firewood. He figured that was the least he could do, since he didn't have a fire type to help start the fire.

Cairo could only be thankful for the darkness, and hope that it hid his bright red face well when he heard the words from Lance. Why did he have to be so damn straight-forward!? He didn't know the answer to Lance's question. They hadn't gotten the chance to discuss it before their date was broken up the night before. Of course, that was because they danced around the topic all night, but still... He released Matsuko's hand as he looked at her, in his eyes were questions that she likely couldn't see. But his words didn't reflect the questions in his eyes. "I don't want to pressure you into anything..." His voice cracked slightly, indicating his uncertainty. "The other day you told me you thought the 'dating thing' was stupid. If that's how you still feel, then I won't bother you about it. But if you think you could have a change of heart, I'd be proud to become the worlds greatest boyfriend before I ever become the World's greatest Pokemon Trainer." His words were sincere, despite being words he never saw himself speaking. He never thought he and Matsuko could end up together. It was never even a thought in the back of his mind. These were his best friends. But lately, he couldn't help but to feel something different. And then "Ooph!" Cairo had to stop himself from yelling out when his foot made contact with a large rock of some sort. He reached down to pick up the rock, preparing to throw it off into the darkness, but when he felt how smooth it was, he could tell it was no normal rock. He had seen and felt evolution Stones at the Academy. Perhaps it was a Fire or Water stone. Or even a Thunder Stone that Lance could use to evolve his Pikachu! He couldn't see it, however, so he placed it in his bag for now...

When they made it out of the cave, Cairo let out a sigh of relief. Though it was well into the night, the moon and the stars provided much more light than the inside of the cave. For the first time since that morning, he could see Matsuko's face. He offered her a gentle smile as he set up his own sleeping bag, and ordered Coal to set the fire. "No way I'll mess up this time! The Cascade Badge and the Contest Ribbon are mine!" Once he was settled, he pulled out the stone he had found in the cave, but only disappointment came over him when he found that it wasn't brightly colored like the evolution stones he had seen in school. It was colored like a normal rock. But it still had that feeling.... That energy that radiated off of it. He decided to hold on to it. He'd give the proffessor a video call when they got to Cerulean City to ask him about it....

Matsuko's face hardened a little at the sudden question. It wasn't a look that she often had on her face, but there were some things she couldn't just laugh off, no matter how much she wanted to dodge it. Their...date the other night didn't really feel real. She didn't know what to say at first. Sure, she said that dating was stupid, but she didn't really mean it. It was just something she never really thought about. Even thinking about it now made her a little nervous. Her fingers twitched and her heart beat a little faster. It wasn't entirely unwelcome, but it did scare her a lot. Dating meant commitment and she wasn't entirely sure if she was ready for it. So, she did what she always did. She didn't answer. She was a coward for running from these things, but she just didn't know. She took Cairo's hand back in hers, hoping that would be enough of an answer for now. She needed to think things through, which was what she did on their way out. Thankfully, something on the ground directed the attention away from her.

She set up her sleeping bag between Cairo's and Lance's. "I hope you guys are ready to lose," she said with a smirk, sliding into her sleeping bag. "Because the Ribbon is going to be mine." Once everyone was settled down, she thought over Lance's and Cairo's words once more and guilt ate at her. It wasn't fair of her to just leave it at that. Cairo was probably just as nervous as she was, but he didn't run from it. She took a deep breath and took his hand hesitantly. "Hey. I know I said that dating was stupid, but... I didn't actually mean it. I was just scared of it and never really though about it. I mean, it just didn't seem like a thing I wanted to do so I just..." she took another breath, stopping herself from rambling any further. "I want to give it a try."
